What Causes Enlarged Prostate? Age, Hormones, Risk Factors
What causes enlarged prostate is not fully known. Health agencies say aging and changes in hormones are thought to play a role, and a family history raises the chance. The growth is not caused by cancer. No single food, drink or mineral has been shown to cause it, so beware of any one-cause story.

What causes an enlarged prostate?
The exact cause of an enlarged prostate is unclear. NIDDK says aging and changes in hormones are thought to play a role, and that the growth is not caused by cancer (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)).
The prostate sits below the bladder and wraps around the urethra. With age, the tissue can grow and squeeze that tube. That is BPH, or benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Because the cause is unclear, anyone who names a single "root cause" is guessing. Doctors describe risk factors, not one trigger.
| Factor | What is known |
|---|---|
| Age | Risk rises over 50; about 29% to 33% of men 65 and older have BPH |
| Family history | Raises the chance |
| Hormone changes | Thought to play a role; not fully mapped |
| Cancer | Does not cause BPH and BPH does not raise cancer risk |
Do hormones cause BPH?
Hormones are linked to BPH, but the link is not fully explained. That is why "hormone" claims on supplement pages need care.
Total testosterone falls about 1% a year with age in men, a rough figure that varies by person and health (Feldman et al., MMAS, JCEM 2002). Yet BPH grows while testosterone drifts down, which shows the story is not simple. Low testosterone is a lab diagnosis for a doctor.
Prostadine's sales page says pomegranate "Supports testosterone levels". No ingredient in Prostadine is shown to raise testosterone, and pomegranate extract showed no testosterone change in a trial of 104 men with no placebo group (Paller et al., Prostate Cancer Prostatic Dis 2013). That study was in prostate cancer, not BPH.
Which BPH risk factors can you change?
You cannot change age or family history, but you can change habits that affect how symptoms feel.
The NHS says mild symptoms are managed with lifestyle steps, and that risk is higher over 50 or with a family history (NHS, Prostate Enlargement). Those steps ease symptoms. They do not shrink the gland.

See packsIs Prostadine aimed at the cause of BPH?
No. Prostadine does not claim to treat BPH, and no study shows that it affects the cause.
The sales page promises a "root cause" story, and its ingredient claims include "Supports prostate repair". We found no human trials of nori, wakame, kelp or bladderwrack for the prostate. Saw palmetto, a better studied ingredient, did no better than placebo in two large BPH trials (Bent et al., NEJM 2006) (Barry et al. (CAMUS), JAMA 2011). Amounts are not printed, so none of those results can be matched to the bottle.
Keep taking prescribed medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding any supplement, especially if you use tamsulosin, finasteride, dutasteride or thyroid medicine. See how we weigh claims in the prostate basics guide and the guides hub.

FAQ01
Quick answers on the causes of BPH
Does having BPH mean I will get prostate cancer?
No. BPH does not raise the risk of prostate cancer, according to the NHS (NHS, Prostate Enlargement). The two can occur together, and symptoms can look alike, so a new change still deserves an exam and a talk about PSA with your doctor.
Can younger men get an enlarged prostate?
It is less common. BPH affects about 5% to 6% of men ages 40 to 64 (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)). Urinary symptoms in a younger man may point to infection or inflammation, so see a doctor rather than assume BPH.
Is an enlarged prostate inherited?
A family history raises the chance, but it does not decide the outcome. Tell your doctor if your father or brothers had prostate problems. That detail helps shape when and how often you are checked.
