Seaweed extracts
Kelp Supplement for Prostate: Kelp, Wakame, Nori Explained
A kelp supplement for prostate support has no human trial behind it. Prostadine lists three seaweeds in this group, nori yaki extract powder, wakame extract and kelp powder, plus bladderwrack, a fourth. All are natural iodine sources, no amounts are printed, and the total iodine in 2 ml is unknown.

The group01
What does kelp powder add to a prostate formula?
It adds a seaweed, and with it a lot of iodine. No study shows it adds anything for the prostate.
Kelp is a large brown seaweed. Prostadine lists "Kelp Powder" third of nine ingredients, after nori yaki extract powder and wakame extract (Prostadine sales page). The sales page gives kelp two claims, "Keeps the system toxin-free" and "Supports a strong urine flow".
We found no human trial of kelp, nori or wakame for the prostate, the bladder or urine flow. What they do have is iodine, a mineral the thyroid needs (NIH ODS, Iodine). That makes the seaweeds a safety topic before they are a benefit topic.

Nori02
What is nori yaki extract powder?
It is a powder from nori, the red seaweed used for sushi wraps, made from the roasted sheets.
Nori has the lowest iodine of the common seaweeds. Dried nori sheets in one study held about 16 mcg per gram, the bottom of the range tested (Teas et al., Thyroid 2004). A 5 g serving of dried flaked nori gives about 116 mcg of iodine (NIH ODS, Iodine).
The sales page says nori "Supports prostate repair" and "Maintains healthy urinary system" (Prostadine sales page). We found no study that tests either idea in men. An extract powder may also be more concentrated than a sheet, and Prostadine does not say.
Wakame03
What is wakame extract?
Wakame is a brown seaweed, Undaria pinnatifida, common in miso soup and seaweed salad.
As a brown seaweed, wakame sits in the group with the highest arsenic, mostly as arsenosugars, though a risk study found low risk at food portions (Hwang et al., Korean seaweed metals 2010) (Yu et al., Food Chem Toxicol 2024). A supplement powder is a different thing from a salad.
The U.S. LactMed record found no valid clinical trials for wakame, even for its one popular use as a milk aid (LactMed, Seaweed (kelp, bladderwrack)). The sales page gives it "Supports normal function of the bladder" and "Strong antibacterial properties". The sources we read show no antibacterial effect of wakame in people.
Iodine04
Do three seaweeds mean three times the iodine?
Not exactly. Iodine in seaweed varies hugely by species, so the mix matters more than the count.
Nori held 16 mcg per gram, while one sample of processed kelp granules held over 8,165 mcg per gram, about 500 times as much (Teas et al., Thyroid 2004). Commercial seaweeds in general range from 16 to 2,984 mcg per gram (NIH ODS, Iodine). A formula heavy in kelp could carry far more iodine than one heavy in nori.
Prostadine lists four seaweeds and iodine itself. The daily need for adults is 150 mcg, and the upper limit is 1,100 mcg (NIH ODS, Iodine). In a Norwegian check of 96 seaweed products, 54 would pass that limit in one portion, and labels were often inaccurate (Aakre et al., Food Nutr Res 2021).
| Source | Iodine found |
|---|---|
| Nori sheets (Teas et al., Thyroid 2004) | 16 mcg per gram |
| Kelp granules, one sample (Teas et al., Thyroid 2004) | Over 8,165 mcg per gram |
| Prostadine, 2 ml | Not printed |
Too much iodine can cause goiter, an underactive thyroid or an overactive one, and autoimmune thyroid disease raises sensitivity (NIH ODS, Iodine). A kelp tablet triggered overactive thyroid in one reported case (Gherbon et al., Medicine 2019). See the iodine page.
Claims05
Are the seaweed claims on the sales page backed by studies?
No. The page names no trial for any of the six seaweed claims.
Each claim is a short phrase with no source. The cards put each one next to what is known.

Claims as printed on the sales page (Prostadine sales page). Photos are the vendor's pictures of each raw ingredient, not of the liquid. Health claims need competent and reliable evidence, ideally trials of the product itself (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).
"Keeps the system toxin-free" is the hardest to test, since no one defines the toxins. Seaweed can bring toxins in: bladderwrack and kelp can contain arsenic, cadmium and lead (LactMed, Seaweed (kelp, bladderwrack)).

What is the difference between kelp and wakame?
Both are brown seaweeds, but they are different species with different iodine and different foods.
Kelp usually means large Laminaria or Saccharina species, and wakame is Undaria pinnatifida. Nori is a red seaweed. Kelp is one of the richest iodine foods, while nori sits at the low end (Teas et al., Thyroid 2004).
Sensitivity07
Can people with seafood or iodine sensitivity use seaweed extracts?
Ask your doctor first. The sources we read do not settle allergy questions.
Seaweed is algae, not shellfish, but the sources we read do not address seafood allergy, so we will not guess. People with a known allergy, a thyroid condition, or a thyroid medicine such as methimazole should check with a doctor, because iodine can add to antithyroid drugs (NIH ODS, Iodine).
Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.
Verdict08
Is a kelp supplement for prostate worth the iodine risk?
The seaweeds are the quiet center of this formula, and nothing about them is proven for the prostate. The questions to ask are about amounts, not claims.
- How much iodine is in 2 ml?
- Is there a metals test for the lot?
- Is your thyroid healthy, and do you take thyroid medicine?

FAQ09
Seaweed questions, short answers
What is nori yaki extract powder?
It is a powder made from nori, the red seaweed used in sushi wraps. Prostadine lists it first of nine ingredients and prints no amount (Prostadine sales page). Nori is the lowest-iodine common seaweed, near 16 mcg per gram in one test (Teas et al., Thyroid 2004).
What is wakame extract?
Wakame extract comes from Undaria pinnatifida, a brown seaweed eaten in soups and salads. Prostadine lists it second with no amount (Prostadine sales page). LactMed found no valid clinical trials for wakame even as a milk aid (LactMed, Seaweed (kelp, bladderwrack)).
What does kelp powder add to a prostate formula?
Mostly iodine. Kelp can hold over 8,165 mcg of iodine per gram in processed granules (Teas et al., Thyroid 2004), and the upper limit for adults is 1,100 mcg a day (NIH ODS, Iodine). No human trial shows kelp helps the prostate.
Do three seaweeds mean three times the iodine?
Not exactly. Iodine varies from 16 to over 8,000 mcg per gram by species (Teas et al., Thyroid 2004). With four seaweeds and iodine listed separately, the total per 2 ml is unknown. Ask the desk or your doctor if you have thyroid concerns.
Does the sales page claim wakame has antibacterial properties, and is that shown?
The page claims "Strong antibacterial properties" for wakame (Prostadine sales page). The sources we read show no such effect in people, and LactMed found no valid clinical trials for wakame (LactMed, Seaweed (kelp, bladderwrack)). Urinary infections need a doctor, not a supplement.
Can people with seafood or iodine sensitivity use seaweed extracts?
Ask a doctor first. Seaweed is algae, but the sources we read do not cover seafood allergy. People with thyroid disease are more sensitive to iodine, and it can add to antithyroid drugs (NIH ODS, Iodine).
What is the difference between kelp and wakame?
Both are brown seaweeds, but kelp usually means large Laminaria species and wakame is Undaria pinnatifida. Kelp can carry far more iodine, up to 8,165 mcg per gram in one sample (Teas et al., Thyroid 2004). Both sit in the highest-arsenic seaweed group (Yu et al., Food Chem Toxicol 2024).
