Shilajit
Shilajit in Prostadine: Purity, Metals and Sleep Claims
Shilajit is a black mountain resin used in Ayurvedic tradition, and Prostadine lists it eighth of nine ingredients with no printed amount. A review found some shilajit samples over heavy-metal limits, and a lab study found two products over. We found no human trial for the sales page's sleep or antioxidant claims.

The resin01
What is shilajit?
Shilajit is a tar-like mineral pitch that seeps from mountain rock, and Ayurveda has used it for centuries.
Raw shilajit is dug or scraped from high mountain rock in places such as India and Pakistan. It is dark, sticky and rich in minerals, and it is sold as a resin, a powder or an extract.
The sales page lists shilajit eighth of nine ingredients, sharing two claims with neem, "Strong antioxidant benefits" and "Sleep supporting properties" (Prostadine sales page). It prints no amount, no source region and no purification step.
The table below puts the vendor photo and claims next to what the label desk can verify.
| Name on the sales page | Shilajit |
|---|---|
| What it is | Mineral pitch from mountain rock (Ayurvedic) |
| Group | Minerals and resin |
| Amount in 2 ml of Prostadine | Not printed |
| What the sales page claims | “Strong antioxidant benefits” / “Sleep supporting properties” |
| What the evidence says | No human prostate or sleep trials found |
| Known or traditional use | Traditional Ayurvedic mineral resin |
| Main caution | Some shilajit samples tested over heavy-metal limits. |
Purity02
Can raw shilajit contain heavy metals?
Yes. A review reports around 65 metals in shilajit, including lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury.
Shilajit forms from rock and plant matter over long periods, so it carries what the rock carried. The review found most reported levels below herbal limits, with a few studies above them (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024). Its authors warn that taking shilajit without knowing the allowed metal levels is not safe.
A separate lab analysis tested two shilajit products sold worldwide, one from India and one from Pakistan. It found lead, arsenic, mercury and other elements above permissible limits (Aldakheel et al., Biol Trace Elem Res 2022).
| Study | What it did | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| Literature review (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024) | Compared reported metal data with WHO and FDA limits | Mostly under limits, a few studies over |
| Lab analysis (Aldakheel et al., Biol Trace Elem Res 2022) | Tested two products from India and Pakistan | Several metals over limits; mercury only in the Indian sample |
Neither result shows that every shilajit product is contaminated. They show why a lot-specific lab report matters, and the vendor has published none. Read the testing and quality page.
Processing03
Is shilajit purified in Prostadine?
The sales page does not say, and the label desk has not seen a metals report.
Some makers purify raw resin before selling it, and others do not. Prostadine states neither. It also names no source region for the shilajit (Prostadine sales page).
The vendor's badges say "GMP" and "made in USA" without naming a lab, certifier or facility. FDA's good manufacturing practice rule requires makers to test the identity of each dietary ingredient, but it is a rule to follow, not an award (21 CFR Part 111 (supplement CGMP)). It does not by itself prove a metal-free product.
Ask for three things: the shilajit source, any purification step, and a third-party heavy-metal result for your lot. The batch lookup page shows how to match a lot.
Claims04
Does shilajit help sleep?
No human trial of shilajit for sleep turned up in the sources we read.
The sales page says shilajit has "Sleep supporting properties" and "Strong antioxidant benefits" (Prostadine sales page). It names no study. The same two claims are copied onto neem, which makes them read as a pair attached to the whole group.
The review we cite is a compositional review, not a human trial, and it says the evidence on how humic substances act in the body is unclear (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024). A lab can find antioxidant compounds in a resin. That is not the same as a sleep benefit in a man.

Claims as printed on the sales page (Prostadine sales page). Photos are the vendor's pictures of each raw ingredient, not of the liquid. Health claims need competent and reliable evidence, ideally trials of the product itself (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance).
Poor sleep and getting up at night are often tied together. The causes of nighttime urination range from fluid habits to heart, kidney and prostate problems (MedlinePlus, Nocturia), so a sleep complaint with urinary symptoms deserves an exam.

Does shilajit raise testosterone?
The sales page does not claim it does, and the sources we read show no such effect.
Shilajit is often marketed online for male vitality. Prostadine's page makes no testosterone claim for it, which is the claim it reserves for pomegranate (Prostadine sales page).
Testosterone slips about 1% a year with age (Feldman et al., MMAS, JCEM 2002), and supplement marketing leans on that. A review of testosterone-booster products found no definitive evidence they work (Balasubramanian et al., J Sex Med 2019). A low reading needs a blood test and a doctor, not a resin.
Caution06
Who should not take shilajit?
The sources we read give no formal exclusion list, so ask a doctor if any of these groups fits you.
Because the main concern is metals, people whose bodies clear metals poorly, or who are already near a limit, are the logical group to be careful. That is our reading, not a published rule. NCCIH's general advice is to tell your providers about every supplement (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely).
- Kidney or liver disease
- Under age 18
- Planned surgery
- A blood thinner or thyroid medicine
Do not stop tamsulosin, finasteride or any other prescription because of a supplement. Show your doctor the Prostadine bottle.
Same-day care is needed if you cannot pass urine at all, see blood in it, or have fever and chills with painful urination.
Fulvic acid07
What does fulvic acid have to do with shilajit?
Fulvic acid is a humic substance found in shilajit, and sellers often point to it as the active part.
Humic and fulvic substances come from long-decayed plant matter. They are the reason shilajit looks black. The review notes that how well humic substances work in the body is unclear (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024).
Prostadine's sales page lists no fulvic acid amount. If a seller quotes a percentage, ask for the lab method and lot number behind it.
Compare shilajit with the other resin-like ingredient on the neem page.
FAQ08
Shilajit questions, short answers
What is shilajit?
Shilajit is a black, tar-like mineral resin from mountain rock, used in Ayurvedic tradition. Prostadine lists it eighth of nine ingredients, prints no amount and gives it the claims "Strong antioxidant benefits" and "Sleep supporting properties" (Prostadine sales page).
Does shilajit help sleep?
We found no human trial showing it does. The sales page claims "Sleep supporting properties" without naming a study (Prostadine sales page). The review we cite looks at composition, not sleep (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024). See a doctor if poor sleep comes with night urination.
Can raw shilajit contain heavy metals?
Yes. A review reports about 65 metals in shilajit, including lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, with a few studies above limits (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024). A lab analysis of two products found several metals over permissible limits (Aldakheel et al., Biol Trace Elem Res 2022).
Does shilajit raise testosterone?
No source we read shows that. The sales page claims testosterone support only for pomegranate, not shilajit (Prostadine sales page). Testosterone supplements in general have weak evidence (Balasubramanian et al., J Sex Med 2019), and a low level needs a blood test.
Who should not take shilajit?
No published exclusion list was in our sources, so ask a doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, take a blood thinner or thyroid medicine, face surgery, or are under 18. Metal content is the main concern (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024).
Is shilajit purified in Prostadine?
Unknown. The sales page names no source region, purification step or heavy-metal test for the shilajit (Prostadine sales page). Its badges name no lab or certifier. Ask for a third-party metals result for your lot before you rely on it.
What does fulvic acid have to do with shilajit?
Fulvic acid is a humic substance found in shilajit and is often called its active part. The review says the effect of humic substances in the body is unclear (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024). Prostadine prints no fulvic acid amount.
