Can Prostate Supplements Raise or Lower PSA? What Studies Say
Can prostate supplements raise PSA or lower it? Saw palmetto does not appear to change PSA, according to NCCIH. For most other ingredients, no good human data exist either way. Prescription finasteride and dutasteride do lower PSA, so tell your doctor about every medicine and supplement before a test.

Can prostate supplements raise PSA?
No supplement has been shown to raise PSA in a way that matters. Saw palmetto, the most studied, does not appear to change it (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).
PSA is a protein that the prostate makes. A blood test measures it, and a high number can come from cancer, an enlarged prostate, infection or other causes (NCI, PSA Test).
| Influence | Effect on PSA |
|---|---|
| Saw palmetto | Does not appear to change it (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto) |
| Finasteride and dutasteride | Lower PSA, so results need adjusting (NCI, PSA Test) |
| Pomegranate juice | Studied in men after prostate cancer treatment, one group, no placebo (Pantuck et al., Clin Cancer Res 2006) |
| Seaweeds, shilajit, neem | No human PSA data found |
Can prostate supplements lower PSA?
No supplement is proven to lower PSA. Be wary of any label that hints at it.
A falling number is not always good news. If a product changed PSA without changing the prostate, a real problem could hide behind a normal result. That is why doctors want to know what you take.
The pomegranate study measured how fast PSA doubled after cancer treatment. It did not test prostate supplements for BPH, and it had no placebo group (Pantuck et al., Clin Cancer Res 2006).
Do not take a product to lower a PSA number before your blood draw. Share the real result with your doctor.
Should you get a PSA test if you take a prostate supplement?
Taking a supplement does not change that decision. Screening is a personal choice you make with a doctor.
For men 55 to 69, US guidance calls for shared decision making. Younger and older men should also discuss it (CDC, Prostate Cancer Screening). A PSA test can find cancer early, and it can also lead to extra tests for a harmless cause.
- A supplement is not a substitute for screening.
- A normal PSA does not prove the supplement helped.
- New urinary symptoms deserve an exam whatever your PSA says.

FAQ01
Quick answers on supplements and PSA
Should I stop my supplements before a PSA blood test?
Ask your doctor, since the answer depends on the product. Most supplements are not known to change PSA, but your doctor may still want a clear picture. Never stop prescribed medicine on your own.
Does a high PSA always mean prostate cancer?
No. PSA can be high from an enlarged prostate, infection or recent procedures, and false positives are common (NCI, PSA Test). A high result leads to follow-up questions with your doctor, not to a diagnosis by itself.
Do prostate supplements hide a rising PSA?
No study shows that, but it is a fair worry for any product that claims to change PSA. Tell your doctor about all supplements so a result is read in context, and keep regular follow-up.
