Prostate Supplement Ingredients: A Glossary
Prostate supplement ingredients usually include saw palmetto, pomegranate, minerals such as iodine and zinc, seaweeds and other plant extracts. Evidence varies by ingredient and is weakest for blends. A label that prints no amounts hides the one fact you need to compare a product with any study.

What ingredients are in prostate supplements?
Most prostate formulas mix a few plant extracts with a mineral or two. Saw palmetto is the best known.
The table is a short glossary of names you will meet, with what we found for each.
| Ingredient | What it is | Research found |
|---|---|---|
| Saw palmetto | Extract of a palm berry | No better than placebo in a 225-man trial (Bent et al., NEJM 2006) |
| Pomegranate | Fruit extract or juice | Studied after prostate cancer treatment, not for BPH (Pantuck et al., Clin Cancer Res 2006) |
| Iodine | A mineral the thyroid needs | Adult limit 1,100 mcg a day (NIH ODS, Iodine) |
| Kelp and bladderwrack | Brown seaweeds | Carry iodine and sometimes arsenic, cadmium or lead (LactMed, Seaweed (kelp, bladderwrack)) |
How do you read a prostate supplement ingredient list?
Read it from the top for names, then across for amounts. A good panel gives both.
- Each ingredient should show a number and a unit, such as mg or mcg.
- A "proprietary blend" gives one total for many ingredients, so single amounts stay hidden.
- The plant part and extract type should be named.
- Other ingredients, such as sweeteners, belong in a separate line.
If any of these are missing, the label cannot be compared with a study. Our page on what is not printed on the Prostadine label shows how we check.
Do more ingredients make a better prostate supplement?
No. A long list says nothing about benefit. Each ingredient needs its own proof, in its own amount.
Adding nine names does not add nine times the evidence. It can add more interaction questions, and more chances for a hidden problem such as extra iodine.
Pick any ingredient on the list and ask for the trial that used that amount. If the seller cannot name one, the ingredient is decoration.
A short list with printed amounts is easier to check than a long list without them.

See packsWhich ingredients does Prostadine name?
Prostadine names nine: nori yaki extract powder, wakame extract, kelp powder, bladderwrack powder, saw palmetto, pomegranate extract, iodine, shilajit and neem. No amounts are printed.
That makes it a clear example of the problem above. Four ingredients are seaweeds and one is iodine itself, so total iodine in a day's drops is unknown. Read the full ingredient breakdown for the evidence on each name.

FAQ01
Quick answers on prostate supplement ingredients
What does a standardized extract mean on a supplement label?
It means the maker aims for a set amount of a marker compound in each batch. It is not a quality award and does not prove the extract works. The label should name the compound and its percentage.
Why do prostate formulas often include zinc or selenium?
They are common minerals added to many men's health products. We found no source in our review showing that either one changes urinary symptoms. If a label lists them, check the amount against the daily upper limits.
Can an ingredient be on the list but absent from the bottle?
Labels can be inaccurate. A study of 96 seaweed products found iodine content that did not match what was printed. Independent lab testing is the only way to confirm, and many sellers do not publish it.
