Prostatitis vs BPH: Two Prostate Conditions Compared
Prostatitis vs BPH is a split between inflammation and growth. Prostatitis is swelling or infection of the prostate and often brings pain, burning or fever. BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement that mostly slows the stream and adds night trips. They can overlap, and a doctor needs a urine test and exam to tell them apart.

What is the difference between prostatitis and BPH?
Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate, often from bacteria. BPH is a slow, non-cancerous growth of the gland. Both can disturb urination, but the causes differ.
NIDDK names four types of prostatitis. Bacterial forms usually start when bacteria move from the urethra into the prostate and are tied to urinary tract infections (NIDDK, Prostatitis). BPH is linked to aging and hormone changes, with an unclear cause (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)).
| Point | Prostatitis | BPH |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Inflammation or infection | Non-cancerous growth |
| Onset | Sudden or long lasting | Slow, over years |
| Typical clues | Pain, burning, sometimes fever | Weak stream, night trips |
| Common care | Antibiotics for bacterial types | Lifestyle steps, medicines |
Do prostatitis and BPH share symptoms?
Yes, they share several, which is why a self-check is not enough. Both can cause urgency, frequent trips and a weak stream.
Prostatitis tends to add pain in the pelvis, groin or lower back, and sometimes pain with urination. Acute bacterial prostatitis can start suddenly. BPH, by contrast, usually develops slowly and is not caused by infection (NHS, Prostate Enlargement).
Points toward prostatitis
Pelvic or groin pain, burning, fever or chills, a sudden start.
Points toward BPH
Slow weakening of the stream, hesitation, dribbling, waking at night.
A man can have both conditions at once, so one finding does not rule the other out.
Which prostatitis signs need care the same day?
Painful, urgent urination with fever and chills needs same-day care. NIDDK says to seek immediate care for that, for blood in the urine, for severe lower belly or urinary pain, and for being unable to urinate (NIDDK, Prostatitis).
Cannot urinate at all: emergency room. Fever or chills with painful urination, blood in urine, or severe belly, back or side pain: same-day care.
Bacterial prostatitis is treated with antibiotics, sometimes for weeks, and antibiotics do not help the non-bacterial type (NIDDK, Prostatitis). That is a reason to get the right diagnosis before you try anything yourself. Keep taking prescribed medicine while you wait for your visit.

See packsCan Prostadine help with prostatitis or BPH?
No. Prostadine does not treat prostatitis or BPH, and it is not an antibiotic. It has not been tested in any trial.
The sales page says wakame has "Strong antibacterial properties" and saw palmetto is a "Strong antimicrobial". We found no human trial showing either one clears a prostate infection. We also found no human trial of wakame for the prostate. Saw palmetto did no better than placebo for BPH in a large trial of 369 men (Barry et al. (CAMUS), JAMA 2011).
Amounts are not printed, so even those studies cannot be compared with the bottle. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding a supplement, particularly if you have a thyroid condition. Read who Prostadine is for and the prostate basics guide.

FAQ01
Quick answers on prostatitis and BPH
Can prostatitis lead to BPH?
Not directly. They are separate conditions, though both can affect the same man. NIDDK ties prostatitis to inflammation and infection, while BPH is linked to aging and hormones (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)) (NIDDK, Prostatitis). Ask your doctor if you have had both.
How long does bacterial prostatitis last?
Acute cases are treated with antibiotics for at least 2 weeks, and sometimes 6 to 8 (NIDDK, Prostatitis). Chronic forms can last longer. Finish the full course your doctor prescribes, even after symptoms ease.
Which doctor diagnoses prostatitis?
A primary care doctor can start with a urine test and exam, and a urologist handles repeated or hard cases. Seek urgent care instead if fever, chills or severe pain appear with painful urination.
