Saw Palmetto Side Effects: Stomach, Bleeding and Hormones
Saw palmetto side effects are usually mild and uncommon. NCCIH lists digestive upset, dizziness and headache, and says use may be unsafe in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Questions remain about blood thinners and hormone medicines, so ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Prostadine lists saw palmetto with no printed amount, and it has no safety study of its own.

What are the common saw palmetto side effects?
The common saw palmetto side effects are digestive upset, dizziness and headache. NCCIH calls them mild and infrequent in studies that lasted up to three years (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).
Mild does not mean none. Follow the directions on your own bottle. Stop and call a clinician if a symptom is new or bothers you (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely).
This table sums up what our sources do and do not say.
| Topic | What is known |
|---|---|
| Stomach, dizziness, headache | Mild and infrequent (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto) |
| PSA readings | Does not appear to change them (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto) |
| Pregnancy, breastfeeding | May be unsafe (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto) |
| Drug interactions | None listed, but ask a provider (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto) |
| Long-term safety | Studied up to 3 years |
Does saw palmetto affect bleeding or blood thinners?
Our sources do not show a proven bleeding effect, and they do not rule one out. NCCIH lists no specific drug interactions but advises talking to a provider before mixing herbs with medicines (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).
Caution matters most with narrow-margin drugs such as warfarin, because most herb-drug interactions are poorly studied (NCCIH, Herb-Drug Interactions). Say that you take saw palmetto before any surgery or dental work, too (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely).
If you take warfarin or another blood thinner, ask before you use saw palmetto or any formula that contains it. We cannot say it is safe with your medicine.
Does saw palmetto change hormones or PSA?
We found no evidence that saw palmetto changes PSA, and none that it changes testosterone. NCCIH says it does not appear to change PSA readings (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).
Men who take finasteride or dutasteride already have lower PSA readings, so tell your doctor about every product you use before a PSA test (NCI, PSA Test). Screening is a personal decision made with a doctor (CDC, Prostate Cancer Screening).
People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or may become pregnant, should avoid it unless a clinician says otherwise (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto).
- Tell your doctor about saw palmetto before a PSA test.
- Ask your pharmacist about tamsulosin, finasteride or dutasteride.
- Do not use it to replace a prescription.

See a doctorFor a weak stream, dribbling, urgency or waking at night to urinate. These are common with an enlarged prostate, but other problems cause them too, and only an exam can tell.
Get care todayFor any sign above. Not being able to urinate at all is an emergency: go to an emergency room or call 911. Do not wait to see if a supplement helps.
Signs from public health sources (NIDDK, Enlarged Prostate (BPH)) (NIDDK, Prostatitis). A supplement never replaces an exam.

FAQ01
Quick answers on saw palmetto safety
Can saw palmetto cause an upset stomach?
Yes, in some people. NCCIH lists digestive upset among the mild and infrequent side effects seen in studies (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto). If drops or capsules upset your stomach, stop and ask a clinician before trying again.
Is saw palmetto safe for long-term use?
Studies have followed users for up to three years and found mostly mild effects (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto). That says little beyond three years or for blended products. Check in with your doctor at regular visits.
Can women take saw palmetto?
Ask a clinician first. NCCIH says it may be unsafe in pregnancy and breastfeeding (NCCIH, Saw Palmetto). Prostadine is aimed at men, and its warnings are not printed in the vendor images, so check your own bottle.
