Shilajit Side Effects: Purity, Metals and Who Should Skip
Shilajit side effects are poorly documented in people, and the main worry is purity. Reviews and lab work found toxic metals such as lead, arsenic and mercury in some samples. Prostadine lists shilajit with no amount and no lab report. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first, and look for third-party metals testing.

What are the side effects of shilajit?
The side effects of shilajit are not well mapped in human trials, so purity is the better-documented concern. We found no large safety study in our sources.
Shilajit is a dark, mineral-rich resin. A literature review reports it holds around 65 heavy metals, including copper, aluminum, lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024). Many reported levels sat below herbal limits, but a few studies exceeded them.
The authors state that using shilajit without knowing permissible metal levels is not safe. The review studied composition, not human harm.
| Source | Finding |
|---|---|
| Literature review | About 65 metals; mostly under limits, a few studies over (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024) |
| Lab analysis of two products | Lead, arsenic, mercury and others over permissible limits (Aldakheel et al., Biol Trace Elem Res 2022) |
| What it does not show | That every product is contaminated |
Is shilajit safe, and what about purity?
Shilajit can be safe only if the product is clean, and that cannot be assumed. A lab study of two kinds sold worldwide, from India and Pakistan, found elements above standard limits, with mercury in the Indian sample only (Aldakheel et al., Biol Trace Elem Res 2022).
That was a small analysis of collected products. It does not show that all shilajit is tainted. It does support asking for third-party heavy-metal results before you buy.
Supplements are not approved by FDA before sale, so purity is the maker's job to prove (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements). Our testing and quality page explains which proofs count. A GMP or "FDA registered" badge with no named lab is not one of them.
A certificate of analysis for the lot, naming the lab and listing lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury.
Who should skip shilajit or ask first?
Ask a professional first if you are pregnant, nursing, treating a child or managing a medical condition. NCCIH urges care in pregnancy, nursing and children, and says to tell every provider about supplements (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely).
- Ask first if you take prescription medicine, since interaction data for shilajit are thin.
- Ask first before surgery, and bring the bottle.
- Skip any product that gives no lot number or lab report.
- Stop and call a clinician if a new symptom appears (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely).
The sales page says shilajit offers "Strong antioxidant benefits" and "Sleep supporting properties". Nothing we read shows this for Prostadine, and no source we found links shilajit to testosterone.

See packsHow can you check the shilajit in Prostadine?
Check it in three steps, because Prostadine prints no amount for shilajit and publishes no lab report. It shows only lot and CoA reference codes, which are seller references, not lab proof.
Read the bottle
Look for a facts panel, lot number and warnings. See the shilajit page.
Ask the desk
Request the lab report for your lot, with a metals panel.
Bring a professional in
Show the label to your doctor or pharmacist. Read the side effects page too.
Keep taking prescribed medicine. Cannot pass urine at all, blood in urine, fever or chills with painful urination, or severe belly, back or side pain means same-day care, and being unable to urinate means the emergency room.

FAQ01
Quick answers on shilajit safety
Does purified shilajit remove the heavy metal risk?
Not by itself. Purification may lower some contaminants, but the review notes that evidence on humic substances clearing metals is unclear (Hussain & Saeed, Biol Trace Elem Res 2024). The sales page does not say how its shilajit is processed. Only a lot-specific lab report answers it.
What is a safe way to buy any shilajit product?
Buy only with a lot-specific certificate of analysis that names the lab and lists metals. Labs found limits exceeded in some products (Aldakheel et al., Biol Trace Elem Res 2022), so a badge or a claim of purity is not enough.
Can children or pregnant women use shilajit?
Ask a clinician first. NCCIH advises caution with supplements in pregnancy, nursing and children (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely). We found no safety data for shilajit in these groups, and Prostadine's label is aimed at adults.
