Too Much Iodine Symptoms: Thyroid Effects and Limits
Too much iodine symptoms come from the thyroid reacting. High intakes can cause goiter, an underactive thyroid or an overactive one. The upper limit for adults is 1,100 mcg a day from all sources. Prostadine lists iodine and four seaweeds with no amounts, so ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medicine.

What are the symptoms of too much iodine?
The main effects of too much iodine are on the thyroid. High intakes can cause goiter, raised TSH, an underactive thyroid, an overactive thyroid and thyroid inflammation (NIH ODS, Iodine).
Symptoms depend on which way the thyroid tips. A swollen neck can point to goiter. A racing heart, anxiety, poor sleep and weight loss can point to an overactive thyroid. Only blood tests can tell which is going on.
One case report shows the overactive picture. A 70-year-old woman with no thyroid history took kelp tablets and developed a fast heartbeat, insomnia, anxiety and a 6 kg weight loss in three months. She recovered after stopping the kelp and taking medicine for a time (Gherbon et al., Medicine 2019). One case does not show how common this is.
| Effect | Source note |
|---|---|
| Goiter | Listed by NIH (NIH ODS, Iodine) |
| Raised TSH, underactive thyroid | Listed by NIH (NIH ODS, Iodine) |
| Overactive thyroid | Listed by NIH; kelp case report (Gherbon et al., Medicine 2019) |
| Thyroid inflammation | Listed by NIH (NIH ODS, Iodine) |
How much iodine is too much?
For adults, the upper limit is 1,100 mcg a day from food, drinks and supplements together. The daily need is 150 mcg, and it rises to 220 mcg in pregnancy and 290 mcg when breastfeeding (NIH ODS, Iodine).
The limit is not a target. People with autoimmune thyroid disease may react at intakes that others tolerate (NIH ODS, Iodine).
Seaweed makes counting hard. Whole seaweeds hold 16 to 2,984 mcg per gram, and a study of 96 seaweed products found 54 where one portion or dose passed the limit (NIH ODS, Iodine) (Aakre et al., Food Nutr Res 2021).
Add up seaweed snacks, kelp tablets, multivitamins and drops. Iodine adds up across products.
Who should ask a professional about iodine first?
Anyone with a thyroid condition or thyroid medicine should ask first. High iodine can add to antithyroid drugs, and potassium iodide can raise potassium with ACE inhibitors and potassium-sparing diuretics (NIH ODS, Iodine).
Thyroid conditions
Includes autoimmune thyroid disease. Ask your doctor.
Thyroid medicine
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding iodine or seaweed.
Pregnancy and nursing
Needs differ, and seaweed may carry metals (LactMed, Seaweed (kelp, bladderwrack)).
Supplements can also affect lab tests, so tell your clinician about every product before blood work (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements).

See packsWhat does this mean for Prostadine?
Prostadine's total iodine per 2 ml is unknown. The sales page lists nori, wakame, kelp, bladderwrack and iodine, but prints no Supplement Facts panel (Prostadine sales page).
That gap matters because four of the nine ingredients are seaweeds and iodine is also listed alone. See the iodine page and the side effects page, and ask the order desk for iodine in mcg.
Do not stop thyroid medicine, tamsulosin or finasteride because of a supplement. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about interactions, using our medicines guide to prepare. Blood in urine, or fever or chills with painful urination, needs same-day care. Being unable to urinate means the emergency room.

FAQ01
Quick answers on iodine excess
Can I tell I am getting too much iodine from symptoms alone?
No. Thyroid effects can look like many other problems. Only blood tests ordered by a clinician can tell (NIH ODS, Iodine). If you notice a racing heart, neck swelling or unusual tiredness, call your doctor.
Does iodine from food count toward the 1,100 mcg limit?
Yes. The limit covers all sources together, including food, drinks and supplements (NIH ODS, Iodine). Seaweed dishes can be high on their own, so add them to what a supplement provides when you do the sum.
Is a kelp supplement safe if my thyroid tests are normal?
Normal tests today do not guarantee safety. Kelp products can hold very different iodine amounts, and a case report shows an overactive thyroid after kelp tablets in a woman with no prior thyroid disease (Gherbon et al., Medicine 2019). Ask your doctor about monitoring.
